Car Wash vs Car Detailing: What's the Difference (and Which Do You Need)?
Updated: 3 days ago
If you've been searching around the Central Coast trying to figure out whether you need a "detail" or just a clean, you're not alone — it's one of the most common questions I get asked.
What people usually mean by "detailing"
Traditional car detailing is a much bigger job — paint correction, ceramic coatings, engine bay cleaning, and multi-day turnarounds. It's a specialist service with specialist pricing, often starting well above $200 and taking a full day or more.
What I actually do
I clean cars — properly, and at a fair flat price. No inflated "detailing" price tag, no quote-on-inspection guessing game. Three simple tiers:
$45 Exterior Clean — exterior hand wash, rims, wheels & tyres, exterior windows (45 min)
$80 Full Clean — adds interior vacuum, interior wipe-down, exterior wash (1hr 15). No wax — that's the $120 Premium Clean
$120 Premium Clean — adds wax, tyre shine and Magic Plastiq on the door sills, trims and jambs (1hr 45)
Exterior windows come up streak-free on all three.
So which do you need?
If your car just needs to look and feel clean — inside and out, without the specialist add-ons — a proper clean does the job at a fraction of the cost and time. If you're chasing paint correction or ceramic coating, that's a different service entirely, and I'd rather be upfront about that than oversell something I don't do.
